Description: Jagged mountain peaks, serene mountain lakes, breathtaking vistas, and epic dark night skies! Expect all these things and more on this incredible 7-Day / 6-Night Photography workshop in the Italian Dolomites.

The Dolomites are in North-Eastern Italy, spread across a huge area and on the border with Austria and Slovenia. They cover more than 300,000 acres, and include 18 famous peaks, some of the best big walls for climbing in Europe, and countless charming mountain villages. The Dolomites were originally known as the Pale Mountains, and you can find some of the most fascinating rocky peaks here.

This workshop is designed to cover some of the most amazing locations in the Dolomites, we will not have a fixed base, we will be spending each night in a different location to shoot some incredible scenes at sunrise, at sunset, and if the weather permits, even throughout the day.

We will be spending most nights in alpine mountain huts, known in Italian as a ‘Rifugio’ or ‘Refuge’ in English. This means that we will always be close to the locations that we plan to photograph and can make the most of the conditions. Every day we will head out early to capture the sunrise in a stunning location, if we are lucky, we will also have some pastel hues in the sky which will give us some stunning images. During the day, we will travel to our next location and have time to discuss the images we have captured throughout the trip and we will also discuss composition/light and different techniques to capture the best of the scene before us.

Highlights of the workshop include:

  • Photograph the classic Dolomite locations in the best light, at sunrise and sunset

  • Photograph some of the most famous mountains and churches in the Dolomites

  • Spend the night in the mountains in Alpine Huts (Rifugios)

  • Learn new skills from 2 professional photographers

  • Improve your composition with in-the-field support and feedback

  • Hike to some of the most incredible vantage points in the Dolomites

Alternatively, you can book by sending an email to info@samuelscicluna.com

Itinerary: We will spend each night in a new location, ensuring we cover as many locations as possible. We will travel from one location to the next in comfortable modern vehicles. A detailed itinerary will be shared with all participants closer to the time.

Day 1: We will meet at Venice Marco Polo Airport and begin our trip by heading North, as the foothills give way to the mountains, we will soon find ourselves in the heart of the Dolomites. We aim to cover a large area of the Dolomites, capturing images of several different mountain groups within the Dolomites.

Days 2 to 6: Each morning we will wake up to shoot sunrise in an incredible location, have breakfast, and then travel to our next location. We usually get to the next Rifugio by late morning, just in time to settle in and have lunch before some free time in the afternoon and a sunset shoot. Dinner is usually in the form of a snack (Sandwich) from the rifugio since we will be out shooting sunset at dinner time.

Day 7: We wake up to shoot the last sunrise of our trip before returning to our rifugio for breakfast. We will then pack our bags and make our way back to Venice with our memory cards full of photos and some great memories!

Mads

My name is Mads Peter Iversen, I live in Denmark, my interest for photography exploded in 2011, and I've been working as a full-time landscape photographer since 2016. I am educated schoolteacher with a master's degree in educational philosophy. After trying out other photography genres, such as headshot photography and commercial videography, I've settled on fine art landscape pictures. Besides landscape photography I also run a YouTube channel focused on the educational side of landscape photography. My experience with videography and video editing goes back to 2002. I love to be in nature and photograph many different landscapes, which results in my photos being very varied. Everything from magical Milky Way night photos, over epic vistas, to calm and atmospheric forest scenes. It's the full spectrum all the way from the relaxing and peaceful over the epic awe and wonder to the dramatic and moody.

Sam Scicluna

I was born and raised on the island of Malta, where my love for beautiful seascapes began. I have always enjoyed being outdoors and surrounded by nature. Growing up on an island, has meant that I always had a special bond with the sea, this led to seascapes being a natural comfort zone and starting point in photography. In 2014, I went on an expedition to climb Mount Etna and later that year also climbed Monte Rosa, spending time in the mountains is what sparked my passion for landscape Photography. In 2016 I traveled to Iceland for the first time, realising a dream and further affirming my passion for landscape photography. I have always been amazed by the night sky, and going camping often has led me to experiment with astrophotography and shooting the night sky. I love outdoor activities like camping, hiking, climbing, scrambling and just exploring new places in general! I also just love taking time out to appreciate the world around me.
